Evaluation Doc “How To” Video Juan Austin and Miranda

Evaluation Document

In this project Austin Juan and I made a How To Video. Before we began planning we had to do some research, so we watched some videos from youtube to get some inspiration.

We watched some on how to be something, and also some on how to make something but we saw none on how to accomplish something. So, we decided to make a how to survive school video.

After we went through the normal process of planning a video, we made a storyboard and script. When making the script we tried to keep everything short, simple, and funny to keep our viewers interested.

We decided we would make our video sort of a parody of a Bear Grylls video. To do this planned to do a following movement with the camera and have austin, our main character, talk to the camera.

Also when filming we also had trouble being able to do a one take video because every morning we tried to film the vending machine was being refilled. Because of this we just decided to film in parts.

So, this is what we did. We followed the script and our camera plan exactly as we’d planned, which doesn’t happen often.

Our overall outcome of the video was really good, the only problem we could see with the video was the noise in the background.

The process of making the video was really fun and we enjoyed doing because there wasn’t many problems.

Hello Viewers this Beaver Stove

Uaaaahh I’m in the academic wilderness, trying to survive for just one day. Right now I’m in Westchester, home of the rabid teenager.

Frist things first, i need to find a source of food. I havnt eaten for three minutes and my health levels are becoming critically low.

I have some change on me, maybe thats enough or a snack

Now, vending machines are very rare creatures in an environment like this. Theres roughly only 1 or maybe even 2 in the whole school.

Ok were scouting for our food this may take a while …

*Whisper* Look at it. It’s just around the corner and from my perspective its loaded with goodies. i’m going to slowly creep up on it and watch out for any other predators. I have to make sure the vending machine is mine.

Ok i made it to the prey, cameraman look take a shot of the delightful Rice Crispies and oh sweet baby jesus they have Hot Cheetos.

Wait no.. the vending machine is off *Slides hand down glass* *excessive amount of tears like he’s soaked in his own tears kind of tears*

I don’t know what ill do but for right now it’s almost next period and i need to finish my god awful geometry homework.

I don’t know what these triangles mean but maybe i can make a paper airplane out of this homework and send a rescue note.

Ok my airplane is done you can that i made the point very sharp for maximum aerodynamic flying. Lets throw it.. *throws airplane* *airplane seems like its flying but then in reality in flew for 2 feet*

Well that was a waste of my time ..

Now for surviving high school you’ll need a set of specific materials in order to survive. #1. You’ll need a pencil and paper #2. Some music if and only if the adult species allows you to listen to it and #3. food.

Now for me, I’ve yet to find food so ill just have to wait for lunch

*After Lunch…*

Ughh that was just disgusting I could’ve sworn that lasagna had a beating heart.

Well It’s almost the end of the day and my mom made dumplings and biscuits….time for a tea party.

Oh and perfect timing my transportation has arrived. Now ill teach you how to survive bus rides.

Till’ next time fellow viewers this is Beaver Stove

Film Sound Design Article

Here are three important things i got out of this article on film’s sound design

  1. ambience- the character and atmosphere of a place
  2. every place has sounds even if it feels like theres nothing there, there’s some sort of sound
  3. rooms tone- a silent sound that many people simply don’t hear
  4. room tone are the hardest to make but the most important because it makes the film more realistic. The character and atmosphere of a place

Gabriel Yared vs. James Horner

As  work of music, i like James Horner’s score. It’s more interesting and and for me its just more entertaining, it’s more music than it is sound effects. A better work of music isn’t always a better score for the film because it may not have all the same sound effects, a film’s audio needs more than just music to make it good. You cant always say which is a absolutely better score the film because different people would like different amounts of music/sound effects, different people enjoy different things.

Short Answer Questions

  1. Around when did sound editing (in the nature of film) begin?

In the mid to late 1920s. The first were called talkies, they had only music and sound effects only. “The Jazz Singer” was the first talkie to be released in October 1927.

  1. Who is Foley? Why does he matter?

Foley is the use of everyday sound effects that help create a sense of reality in a film.

Experimental Video Evaluation – Miranda and Sara

We were given the task to create a video consisting of experimental concepts that are rarely used. We basically just had to experiment with camera shots, editing, etc. We researched experimental videos on the internet and came across some really great videos. For example Call Me In The Afternoon by Half Moon Run was an outstanding video with very cool editing.

Finally we deiced to design a video with lots of effects. We wanted to make a video that would require lots of different hue changes to show out skill in photoshop.

At first we planed to make the video in first person because of our idea. We realized the video would get old fast so we changed our plan to be a short amount of time first person and the rest third person with lots of unusual camera angles and movements to keep the audience interested and amazed.

While creating we realized how hard it was to come up with not normal camera angles and movements! We got a came up with a few but that was the hardest part of filming and going through with our plan. As we planned, we recored a short piece of the film in first person and the rest in third person and used as many camera angles as we could.

Editing was terrible we thought we could do many things with the effects but unfortunately we were very wrong, its much harder than it seems to edit. We planned to do so many things that we either didn’t have time for or didn’t know exactly how to do it, and we ended up not being able to do all the things we planned because of lack of time but we did get done the most important part which was putting effect in the areas where sara had her glasses on and also putting effect in the first person shot on only the galsses. that was our biggest goal and we accomplished that.

The project was challenging but we did accomplish our biggest goals, we learned a lot, and we had fun experimenting.
